I've been muzzled
and I don't like it
Last month I wrote about the several interviews I gave in the Huffington Post and other media with my opinions of a certain president’s signature. Once the cat was out of the proverbial bag, it occurred to me that I could potentially have a problem. Not that I said anything wrong or negative (and what about the first amendment, anyway?). Besides, I’m not all that high profile. But in these strange times, such things don’t always make much difference.
I became concerned because my green card has to be renewed next year. So, I contacted two immigration attorneys. Both said my concerns were well-founded. Their advice: do not post anything political in social media (which I have had a habit of doing) because Facebook especially is being monitored.
So now, when there is some funny or important meme to share, I must figuratively bite my tongue.
I don’t like being muzzled.
In honor of Spooky Season, FREE books coming up!
This month I’ve got TWO ebook giveaways, both in my Beyond the Veil series (there are ghosts). These are not just excerpts, they’re the full book. The Last Door will be free October 16-20. When twins inherit a Victorian mansion in Big Sur from a stranger, it changes everything they knew about who they are.
Proof of Life will be free October 30-November 2. Jessica Mack has been trying to ignore the voices she hears from the other side, but when a missing child needs her help, she can ignore them no longer.
YET ANOTHER FREEBIE - but not from me...
A couple of weeks ago I had the honor of participating on a Mystery Writers of America online panel, with each of us giving a five-minute reading from our latest books. One of my fellow authors was James Dain, who was new to me. I was intrigued by the excerpt he read, and we later had a chat.
The result--we’ve exchanged links for our subscribers to get a free book. James’ thriller, The Body in the Alley, sucks you right in and holds on tight. You wouldn’t want to be on the wrong end of his hero’s terrible dilemma. He didn’t kill the guy whose body lies in the alley behind the nightclub, but he’s about to be framed for the murder... unless he can stop the real killer, a violent thug.
So, I can’t post about my political views--nor would I in my newsletter--but I think we are all in for a bumpy ride. Let’s remember to be kind to one another, regardless of who we are or what we believe. It’s hard work to keep our humanity and our optimism intact, but it’s worth the effort. Research shows optimism actually improves mental health.
I wish every one of you well.

I don't blame you. I don't like any of this -- at all -- for any of us!
We are living in an incredibly unstable time. It feels like we're at the tipping point where we could find ourselves rebuilding what has already been lost, or in a very similar situation to Germany between 1933 and 1945. I know a lot of Americans who are reluctant to leave the country in case they aren't able to get back in.
